Laminate
A high-density fiberboard core with a printed image and a clear wear layer.
Both are floating floors that imitate wood for less than hardwood. The difference that matters most in Atlanta is water.
Laminate looks convincing and feels firm; vinyl handles a wet basement or a leaking dishwasher far better.

A PVC-based plank, rigid or flexible, with a printed wear layer and a water-resistant core.
| What matters | Laminate | Luxury vinyl plank |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Surface water is fine if removed quickly, but a soaked core swells permanently. | Water-resistant or waterproof cores tolerate standing water when seams are sealed. |
| Below grade | Not recommended for basements. | Commonly approved for basements over a moisture-tested slab. |
| Feel underfoot | Firmer and harder, and often reads as a solid surface. | Softer with a slight give; underlayment changes the feel. |
| Wear and dents | Good scratch resistance, though edges can chip on impact. | Resists dents and moisture, though heavy grit can dull the wear layer. |
| Installation | Floating click, needing a flat subfloor and an expansion gap. | Click or glue-down; flatness matters for the click format. |
| Repair | Damaged planks are difficult to replace invisibly. | Individual planks can often be replaced. |
No. Water-resistant laminate exists, but a soaked core swells and cannot be repaired. Vinyl is the safer choice anywhere water is plausible.
Both have improved. At the same price the difference is mostly texture and edge detail, best judged with physical samples in your own room.
