Wood-Look Tile vs Luxury Vinyl Plank

Wood-look tile is the most durable wood imitation available and the most demanding to install. Vinyl is more forgiving and much faster.

The deciding factors are usually the subfloor, the grout line and how the room feels underfoot.

Wood-look porcelain tile

Rectified porcelain planks with a wood image, installed with thin-set and grout.

Luxury vinyl plank

A resilient plank with a printed wood look, floated or glued over a prepared subfloor.

What mattersWood-look porcelain tileLuxury vinyl plank
DurabilityExtremely hard wearing; resists water, heat and scratches.Durable, but a wear layer can dull and sharp impact can mark it.
WaterFully water-tolerant, including bathrooms and mudrooms.Water-resistant when seams are sealed; not a substitute for a shower floor.
GroutGrout lines are part of the look and need cleaning and sealing. No grout, so cleaning is simpler and the surface is continuous.
ComfortCold and hard; needs mats or radiant heat to feel comfortable.Warmer and softer underfoot.
InstallationThin-set over a deflection-rated, flat subfloor, and it adds height.Floats or glues over a prepared slab or wood subfloor with less height gain.
RepairA cracked tile means removing and resetting with grout.Individual planks can be replaced.

Choose Wood-look porcelain tile when

  • A bathroom, mudroom, sunroom or any space that gets genuinely wet.
  • You want the longest service life and can accept grout maintenance.
  • The floor structure meets deflection requirements for tile.

Choose Luxury vinyl plank when

  • You want a wood look with no grout and a warmer feel.
  • The subfloor or budget will not support a tile assembly.
  • Speed and repairability matter.

What we check before recommending either

  • Joist deflection and subfloor flatness, which decide whether tile is viable at all.
  • Finished floor height against doors and cabinets.
  • How transitions work where tile meets another material.

Common questions

Can wood-look tile go over a wood subfloor?

Yes, if the structure meets deflection requirements and a suitable underlayment is used. A deflection check comes first.

Does tile hurt resale value?

Wood-look tile in wet rooms is generally seen as an upgrade. Whole-house tile used as a wood substitute is more polarizing.
